Do You Consider the Meaning of Your Art as You Make It?
As a former Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow (2016), I'm occasionally asked my opinion on artsy things in the state of Mass or artsy things in general. I was recently asked to weigh in on the above question for MCC's Artist Voices feature. I, along with two visual artists and a choreographer, considered the above question. Truth be told, I could have answered the question in a handful of different ways. But, since I'm a poet, I kind of sidled up to the back door, then entered through a window. I want to add here, since I can, that yes, I do consider the meaning of my poems as I make them, but it's a kind of checking in, checking out, back and forth between conscious and subconscious. And I try not to hang out too long with Meaning during the writing of a piece. I guess I could have just cut to the point and said that! How about you, dear artists of all media? Do you consider the meaning of your art as you make it?
